Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. Complaint

Susan Simpson crawled to the front door of the Louisville Avenue Dollar Tree with blood smeared across her head and hands begging for help minutes after a robbery and attack in the business' parking lot, but she said none of the employees dared to open the door and assist her.

Simpson exited the Dollar Tree around 10 p.m. Saturday and noticed a man walk toward the entrance. An employee locked the door before he could enter, so he turned his attention to Simpson as she walked to her vehicle.

He ran up behind her and screamed for her purse.

At first Simpson thought he was joking. Then he pulled out a gun.

"I told you to give me the purse," he screamed.

She heard a pop in her ear and collapsed to the ground. She thought she had been shot but instead he slapped the gun across her ear. He stole her purse and $100 in cash.

"Blood was all over my face and my clothes and I was in shock. I was on the ground yelling for help. I crawled to the front door put my hand on the glass and yelled for help. They just stood there. I showed them the blood and told them to call the police. After several minutes they told me (through the door) that police and an ambulance were on the way. But they didn't come out to help, give me a towel, hold my hand, comfort me," Simpson said.

She was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Assistant Monroe Police Chief Don Bartley said investigators are looking for a black male, slender build, who was wearing a black parka and white scarf that covered his face at the time of the assault. He fled the scene toward Windsor Apartments.

Bartley said the suspect was seen walking toward the entrance of the Dollar Tree, located at 2100 Louisville Ave., by an employee who immediately locked the door.

Monroe police ask people with information about the assault to call Crime Stoppers or the police department at 329-2600.

A manager at Dollar Tree declined to comment, referring all questions to corporate headquarters, which has not responded.
